Custom eLearning Development — Unity · WebGL · SCORM

Training people should not mean clicking through slides

We build custom eLearning that lets people practise, not just read: interactive 3D training simulations, serious games and gamified courses developed in Unity and WebGL — packaged as SCORM or xAPI so they run and track in the LMS you already use.

What custom eLearning development means here

Custom eLearning development is the design and software development of training content built specifically for one organisation — its machinery, procedures, products and risks — instead of adapting generic course templates. Maia Management develops custom eLearning as real-time 3D applications in Unity and WebGL, delivered as SCORM- or xAPI-compliant packages that run in any standard Learning Management System.

Most custom eLearning solutions on the market are still built with slide-based authoring tools: text, images, a quiz at the end. That works for policy training. It does not work when people need to learn to operate something — a production line, a safety procedure, a complex product. That is where our background building real-time 3D product configurators for manufacturers carries over directly: the same Unity and WebGL stack that lets a customer configure an industrial product lets a trainee manipulate it, disassemble it, and make mistakes safely.

What we build

/01

3D training simulations

Interactive replicas of your machinery, plant or product. Trainees practise procedures — startup, maintenance, emergency response — in the browser, with no risk and no downtime on real equipment.

/02

Serious games

Scenario-based learning with decisions and consequences: branching situations, scoring, failure states. Designed for engagement metrics that slide courses never reach.

/03

Gamified eLearning

Progression, levels, achievements and leaderboards layered onto structured learning objectives — eLearning gamification as software design, not stickers on slides.

/04

SCORM & xAPI packaging

Every build is wrapped as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 or xAPI, with completion, score and progress reported to your LMS. Technical details in our Unity WebGL & SCORM guide.

/05

Virtual & VR training

Immersive training experiences for headsets or desktop, developed in Unity. The same simulation logic can target WebGL for reach and VR for depth.

/06

LMS integration

Deployment and testing on your platform — Moodle, Docebo, SAP SuccessFactors, Cornerstone and any other SCORM/xAPI-compliant LMS — plus custom reporting where standards fall short.

Authoring tools vs custom development: when each makes sense

We are not here to sell custom development for everything. If your training is content-first — policies, compliance reading, product knowledge — an authoring tool is faster and cheaper. Custom Unity development earns its cost when the training is skill-first.

The last row matters: from your LMS's perspective a Unity WebGL simulation is just another SCORM course. Nothing about your training infrastructure changes.

Where it applies

The strongest use cases we see come from the same industrial world our configurators serve: manufacturing and machinery training (operating procedures on equipment that is expensive or dangerous to practise on), safety training (emergency scenarios that cannot be rehearsed for real), technical product training for sales networks and installers (a 3D product your teams can explore beats a PDF datasheet), and onboarding in environments where new hires need spatial familiarity before day one. If you already have CAD or 3D models of your products and plant, a large part of the asset work is already done — which directly reduces cost and timeline.

How a project runs

  1. Training analysisWe start from the skill gap, not the technology: what must people be able to do after the course that they cannot do now, and how is it measured.
  2. Scenario & interaction designLearning objectives become concrete scenarios, mechanics and assessment logic. You review a design document before any development starts.
  3. 3D asset pipelineWe reuse your CAD/3D files where possible and model what is missing, optimised for real-time WebGL performance.
  4. Unity developmentSimulation logic, interactions, scoring and feedback, built in iterative milestones you can test in the browser as they land.
  5. SCORM/xAPI packaging & LMS testingThe build is wrapped, tracked and verified on your actual LMS — completion, score and progress reporting included.
  6. Rollout & iterationLaunch support, analytics review, and refinements based on how real trainees actually behave in the simulation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does custom eLearning development cost?
It depends on the scope: the number of 3D scenes or simulations, the depth of interactivity, whether existing 3D/CAD assets can be reused, assessment logic, and the SCORM or xAPI tracking requirements. A single-module 3D simulation is a very different project from a full gamified curriculum. We scope each project individually and give you a fixed quote before starting — tell us what you need to train people on and we'll break the cost down transparently.
Will it work with our LMS?
Yes. We package every course as a SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 or xAPI package, which are the standards supported by virtually every LMS — Moodle, SAP SuccessFactors, Cornerstone, Docebo, TalentLMS and the rest. Completion, score and progress are reported to your LMS exactly like any other course.
Can Unity content really run inside an LMS?
Yes. Unity exports to WebGL, which runs in the browser with no plugin or install. We wrap the WebGL build in a SCORM-compliant package with a manifest and a JavaScript layer that talks to the LMS, so the 3D simulation launches and tracks like a normal course. See our Unity WebGL and SCORM guide for the technical details.
Does it work on mobile devices and tablets?
WebGL content runs in modern mobile browsers, and we optimise builds for mobile GPUs where mobile delivery matters. For heavy 3D simulations we advise on the right trade-off between visual fidelity and device coverage during scoping, so you know exactly what runs where before development starts.
How long does a custom eLearning project take?
A focused single-simulation module typically takes a few weeks from kickoff to a SCORM package ready for your LMS; larger gamified programmes with multiple scenarios take longer. Timelines shorten considerably when you already have 3D models or CAD files of your machinery and products, because asset creation is usually the largest work item.
