Shopify Product Configurator

Shopify makes it easy to sell products with a few variants. It gets harder when your product is genuinely configurable — materials, components, engravings, dimensions. A custom Shopify product configurator lets customers build their exact product in 3D, see the price update live, and add that precise configuration to the cart.

Beyond variants and photo swatches

The standard Shopify product page works on a simple assumption: a manageable list of variants, each with its own photos. Configurable products break that assumption. The combinations explode past what you can photograph, and past what Shopify variants can reasonably model. Customers end up choosing from dropdowns and imagining the result.

A 3D product configurator for Shopify — what many stores search for as a visual product configurator — replaces the imagining with a single interactive model: rotate it, change options, watch materials and price update in real time. The configuration the customer sees is exactly what enters the order — structured, unambiguous, ready for fulfilment or production.

How it integrates with Shopify

Theme embed

Lives in your store

The configurator is embedded in your Shopify theme — on the product page or a dedicated page — matching your typography, colours and layout.

Cart data

Variants & line item properties

Configurations map to real variants where possible, and to line item properties when combinations exceed Shopify's variant model — the order always carries the full configuration.

Pricing

Live price updates

Option-based pricing is calculated as the customer configures, so the price on screen is the price at checkout.

Headless ready

Hydrogen & Storefront API

The configurator is a self-contained WebGL app, so it fits classic themes and headless storefronts alike.

Custom build vs Shopify configurator apps

The App Store has no-code configurator apps, and there are SaaS configurator platforms that embed via script. For simple personalisation they can be enough. The trade-offs appear as soon as your product or brand is not generic:

3D qualityModels, materials and lighting built for your product; smooth in any modern browser, mobile included.Template viewers with limited control over geometry and rendering quality.
Option logicRules follow your real product logic: dependencies, incompatibilities, dimension-driven pricing.Flat option lists; complex dependencies quickly hit the app's ceiling.
Ownership & costYou own the code and assets. No monthly app fees, no per-view or per-order charges.Recurring subscription, sometimes usage-based; switch off the app and the configurator is gone.

Built for real Shopify catalogues

Where the combinations are few, the configurator writes to standard variants and your existing reporting keeps working. Where they are not — engraving text, measured dimensions, thousands of material combinations — we use line item properties and price rules so the customer configures freely while your team still receives complete order data. The same configuration can also travel beyond Shopify, transmitted as structured data to your ERP or CRM for quotes, bills of materials and production. We build most Shopify configurators with Three.js WebGL, moving to Unity WebGL when the project calls for advanced real-time rendering — for furniture, jewellery, watches, technical products and anything in between.

Frequently asked questions

How does a 3D product configurator work with Shopify?
The configurator is embedded in your Shopify theme or headless storefront. Each configuration maps to real variants and line item properties, the price updates live as options change, and the exact configuration is added to the Shopify cart and carried through checkout into the order.
Custom configurator or a Shopify app from the App Store?
Configurator apps are quick to install but generic: template 3D, rigid option logic, monthly fees and an interface that is not yours. A custom WebGL build is shaped around your products, rules and brand, and you own the code with no per-order or per-view fees.
Does it handle Shopify's variant limit?
Yes. When the number of combinations exceeds what Shopify variants can model, we use line item properties and option-based price rules, so the customer can configure freely while the order still contains complete, structured configuration data.
Does it work with headless Shopify (Hydrogen / Storefront API)?
Yes. The configurator is a self-contained WebGL application, so it integrates with a classic Shopify theme as well as headless storefronts built on Hydrogen or the Storefront API.
